While some may know him as the founder of Canonical, the company behind the popular Ubuntu operating system, he also holds the incredible distinction of being the first South African in space! From Business to Blastoff: While attending the University of Cape Town, Shuttleworth founded a company called Thawte, which became a leader in internet security. He then sold the company and turned his sights on space. In 2002, fueled by a lifelong dream, he funded his own trip to the International Space Station through Space Adventures, a company facilitating space tourism. This was no easy feat. To prepare for the mission, Shuttleworth underwent rigorous training for almost a year in Russia, transforming himself from tech entrepreneur to space explorer. A Spacefaring South African: On April 25th, 2002, Shuttleworth blasted off aboard a Soyuz capsule, becoming the second space tourist and the first person from South Africa to reach space. His mission wasn't just sightseeing though. He spent eight days on the International Space Station participating in scientific experiments related to AIDS and genome research. Where is He Now? Today, Shuttleworth remains a prominent figure. He continues to lead Canonical and is actively involved in philanthropic efforts through the Shuttleworth Foundation, which focuses on education in South Africa. He also holds dual citizenship in South Africa and the UK.
