Ready to be blown away? Plans are underway for the first ‘Space Hotel’. That’s right, folks: an actual hotel, in ACTUAL space! And it’ll be open to the (presumably extremely wealthy) public by 2027! As I’m writing this, an aerospace company is preparing for travelers to have an ‘out of this world’ experience, complete with bed and breakfast and some pretty impressive views. Again, I’m not joking: this ACTUALLY HAPPENING! The Voyager Station aims to open to the citizens of planet earth in this very decade! At the moment it’s a work in progress but it’s full steam ahead. Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC) is a construction company run by one, John Bilincow. This is OAC’s first major project and the very first space hotel in the whole wide world. It’s a slightly ambitious and enormously impressive task. Once complete, Space Hotel will accommodate 280 guests and 112 crew members and, of course, a whole lot of artificial gravity. Okay, imagine this: You’re on a giant, spinning orb-like object, shaped a bit like a bicycle wheel. (It spins to create the artificial gravity that ultimately keeps you from drifting away into forever.) This same gravity will also give you a sense of weightlessness, similar to what you might experience on the moon, if you know what I mean. Planning your trip yet? No? Well, this may sway you. Space hotel guests will have access to an array of activities on board, plus all the usual mod-cons: gym, sauna, cinema, bars, and discos. You can even play a game of basketball or visit the library. And sure, you can do all those things on earth, but can you do it with zero gravity? Exactly! Okay, let’s talk food! You’ll have unlimited access to traditional space food such as freeze dried ice cream and other such delicacies from themed restaurants boasting top quality chefs from, well, Earth! (But again, have you ever had dinner in zero gravity?) Now you’re getting excited, right? Well, sadly no room rates have been announced just yet. But OAC hopes to (eventually) make the cost similar to the price of a cruise ticket. Which is wonderful news for your wallet and for those suffering from seasickness! We understand that construction is likely to begin in 2026, with the lucky first visitors to check in sometime in 2027. (Full disclosure: I highly doubt these first guests will be paying the ‘cost of a cruise ticket’ cost.) We will keep an eye (or telescope, rather) on this project and will keep you updated with the details. We’ll try not to blink though, as things seem to be happening very fast! (Is that because time goes faster on space? Does it?) Until next time, friends!
